Turn
Created during live figure drawing sessions at the Art Academy, this large-format charcoal drawing is based entirely on direct observation from a live model. The composition focuses on gesture, spatial balance, and anatomical structure, using a restrained academic approach to line and tonal development.
The figure is positioned in partial profile with the back turned toward the viewer, allowing the composition to be constructed through contour, posture, and directional movement rather than facial expression. Visible gestural studies remain on the left side of the paper, preserving elements of the working process and reinforcing the immediacy of the live session.
Executed on warm-toned kraft paper, the drawing integrates the surface itself into the tonal structure of the work, allowing the charcoal to move between precision and openness. The large scale reinforces the physical presence of the composition while maintaining the directness characteristic of academic figure study.
The artwork was produced in 2017 and minor traces of age, including subtle discolouration and light surface irregularities, are consistent with the natural characteristics of kraft paper over time. The charcoal has been fixed for preservation and the work remains stable.
