The Recluse
Created during live academic figure drawing sessions at the Art Academy in Split, this large-scale charcoal drawing is based entirely on direct observation from a live model. The work reflects a traditional academic approach to figure study, focused on proportion, anatomical structure, gesture, and tonal economy.
The composition is intentionally restrained, using minimal line and selective tonal development to establish presence and spatial weight. Executed on kraft paper, the natural warmth of the surface functions as part of the composition itself, softening transitions and reinforcing the material quality of the drawing.
Produced in 2017, the work displays minor traces of age, including subtle discolouration and light surface irregularities characteristic of kraft paper over time. The charcoal has been fixed for preservation and the artwork remains stable.
