Inward
Created during live model sessions at the Art Academy in Split, this charcoal drawing is based entirely on direct observation and executed through a restrained academic approach to line, proportion, and gesture.
The composition is constructed with minimal intervention, allowing the figure to emerge through selective contour and open space rather than dense tonal rendering. The seated pose introduces a strong internal structure to the drawing, while the directional positioning of the figure creates a sense of distance and self-containment within the composition.
Executed on warm-toned kraft paper, the surface itself functions as an active material element, softening transitions and reinforcing the physical character of the work. The economy of line and the large vertical format give the piece a contemporary spatial quality while remaining rooted in traditional figurative study.
The artwork was produced in 2017 and minor traces of age, including subtle discolouration and light surface irregularities, are consistent with the natural characteristics of kraft paper over time. The charcoal has been fixed for preservation and the work remains stable.
