The Formalist, 2023

 The Formalist is an original figurative portrait defined by a composed frontal presence and a strong contrast between the sitter’s illuminated face and dark formal clothing. The asymmetric treatment of light and shadow gives the portrait its visual tension, while the moustache, tailored collar and patterned tie establish a distinctive sense of character.

Executed in charcoal on paper, the drawing moves between carefully observed facial features and broader, more expressive passages of charcoal. Dense tonal areas across the clothing are balanced by exposed paper and directional marks in the background, creating depth while retaining the immediacy of the medium.
