Presence
Created during live figure drawing sessions at the Art Academy in Split, this charcoal drawing is based entirely on direct observation from a live model. The work is constructed through restrained line work and selective emphasis, allowing the figure to emerge through proportion, posture, and spatial balance rather than detailed rendering.
The composition is defined by the asymmetrical positioning of the body and the angular relationship between the limbs, creating a controlled tension within the figure while maintaining a strong sense of stillness. The reduced treatment of the lower section of the composition preserves the immediacy of the live study process and reinforces the openness of the work.
Executed on warm-toned kraft paper, the drawing integrates the natural surface into the tonal structure of the composition. The contrast between the exposed paper and the concentrated charcoal line gives the work a contemporary spatial quality while remaining grounded in academic figurative tradition.
The artwork was produced in 2017 and minor traces of age, including subtle discolouration and light surface irregularities, are consistent with the natural characteristics of kraft paper over time. The charcoal has been fixed for preservation and the work remains stable.
